Making Money At CafePress
with Your Own Designs

There are so many get quick schemes out there that it can be difficult to figure out what type of money making opportunity is the real deal and what type is really just out to cost you money in the long run. If you are good at graphic design, or want a place to practice and become good at it, there is a legitimate creative way of making money through CafePress.

CafePress is a website where users create and design their own products. T-shirts, mouse pads, posters, mugs, and calendars are just a few of the products where you can place your own designs. Your products are posted in a personal online store where buyers can shop and hopefully purchase them. A percentage of the sales goes directly to the you, the designer. CafePress Logo Photo

Wondering how an operation such as this can make money? CafePress uses a process known as a print on demand. This technology eliminates the possibility of unsold goods gathering dust and eventually having to be marked down below cost just to clear shelf space. You can be bold and adventurous, testing the market with designs that you think somebody else might like. If they don't, no lost money for you.

There are no start-up costs at this website. Just fill out the required information and design a few products. There is a paid option for those that want a more customizable option in shopkeeping. One big difference between the free and paid shops is the amount of products that are allowed to be listed within a shop. The free shop allows a maximum of 80 products, while the paid shops have unlimited possibilities.

CafePress is easy to use and once your products are created and posted in your store, there is nothing to do but wait on commissions. Once the commission start coming, you will probably want to design more products. Each product becomes a possible source of residual income.

This isn't a get rich quick idea - it does take time and effort. Although anyone can put a picture or slogan on a mug and market it, if it doesn't find a willing buyer it will just sit there, looking pretty. The more creative you are in design and successful you are in finding a good niche, the more product you will sell.

For those who have their own websites, your own imprinted products store will pay dividends beyond making a commission. Imprinted products featuring your website name or logo helps your site look "established." Depending on the particular niche of your website, you could even order items from your own store and use them as promotional items or contest prizes. CafePress has the capability of printing your own self-written book using print on demand technology. It might take a little time to pull that off, but having your own book title is at the top of the credibility pyramid for most of us.

One final thing to consider regarding CafePress is the commission rate. Until recently, store owners were allowed to set their own sales point and percentage of profit. That has been changed to a flat 10% commission. Veteran store owners aren't happy with the change, but as a potential store owner you aren't burdened with the past. All you have to do is decide whether it is possible for you to move enough product to make 10% worthwhile. It is a sure 10%, with no worry of losing any money.

Or you could check out Zazzle, a similar website that still allows store owners to set markup and profit for each product. Since they are both free, maybe you should try both.
