What Is An Infopreneur?
An infopreneur is simply a publisher of information on the web. Today, most who fall into that category of website builders provide information free of charge. They build content, the best ones build lots of it, and if there is any money to be made, it is a by-product of the free information.
Have you ever done a web search for your next vacation and found a site that provided page after page of free information, everything from the best hotels to where the dog parks were located, and it didn't look like the work of the Chamber of Commerce? That was probably a site that belonged to an infopreneur. He gave it away, but if he's like most infopreneurs he wanted something back in return. He was hoping that you would purchase a product from an ad on his website or maybe download an e-book so he could collect a commission. Since some advertisers pay for clicks, he would have been pleased if you had found one of those ads and clicked on it. Everybody Is An Expert on SomethingEverybody knows quite a lot about something. Some of the most successful infopreneurs are those that build sites about their occupations. A subject as bland as water heaters could turn into a huge money maker. Computers are almost as common in homes today as TV sets. Most of those computers are connected to the internet. A large percentage of those who own a computer would check the net for water heater reviews before they went shopping. I'm not sure how many of those people would actually order a water heater from a website, but companies that market smaller products like books, cameras, and hobby supplies probably sell as many items over the net as they do from bricks and mortar establishments. It is more convenient and sometimes cheaper to buy airline tickets, lodging reservations and concert tickets over the net than it is the telephone. If you have bought any of those things over the internet, you might have paid an infopreneur a commission. If you had known that, you probably wouldn't have cared because it didn't cost you anything beyond what you would have paid anyway. Some people build sites about a hobby or area of interest. I collect autographs, so I built a website about autograph collecting. I make money on that site from eBay, Adsense, and Amazon. Any money that I make is well deserved because I have almost 300 pages of free content and answer questions free of charge. Not Just WebsitesIn addition to my five websites (all hosted by Site Build It), I am an infopreneur at sites like Squidoo, Hubpages, Blogger and WordPress where I can write pages free of charge. I place ads on my pages at those sites, but the greatest benefit of those pages is the traffic that they drive to my websites and the backlinks that build authority with the search engines. How Much Money Can I Make? The only way to find that out is to jump in and start building content. Some bloggers make thousands per month, others make enough for a good cup of coffee. Some lensmasters at Squidoo or Hubbers at HubPages make hundreds per month, a select few even a thousand, others make nothing, and some don't even try. From my experience, the best shot at making money is a static website like this one. Most people can make money with websites. Most who don't give up too soon. It takes awhile to build enough content, and it takes awhile to gain credibility with the search engines. The great thing about being an infopreneur is that since you don't have to sell product, you can spend most of your time building content. Once you begin making money, you can go on vacation or just take a break for no good reason and the money keeps coming. You can do what you do from anywhere that you can access the net, without having to worry about getting behind on orders. I know of infopreneurs who have built one or more successful sites and moved to places (often out of their native country) where they could live on the beach, but couldn't have found employment. Once you get your site "built out" (it is never finished), you can slow down on providing content to that site and build another... and another ... and another.
