Making Money with Photography

For many, photography is more than just a past time or a way of capturing intimate moments. It is a passion. For photographers that are passionate about what they do, there are a number of making money with photography. Of course, like any other personal business, making money with digital photographs takes time and dedication.

Before You Start

Before you can even consider the possibility of making money with photography, you need to be sure that you have a high-quality camera. While digital cameras have recently become more cost effective, many places that will purchase or display your photographs have quality requirements for the type of camera you use. One with a detachable lens is usually your best option.

If you are photographing people, you need to be sure that you have them sign a release. This allows you to sell photographs of them without having to worry about any legal problems. You might even consider swapping interests and services to obtain their consent. Maybe you know of a family that has wanted a family portrait but hasn’t had the money to spend on one. Offer them a free portrait in exchange for posing for a couple of hours.

Making Money with Stock Photos

Stock photos are used everywhere: magazines, billboards, websites, and even book publishers. Stock photos are often used for one of two reasons. One, the company does not have access to the type of photograph they need. Two, they are trying to save money. By choosing to forgo hiring a photographer to actually shoot the pictures they need, they save tremendous amounts of money.

So where do your digital photos come in? When you register for a stock photography website, you are allowing individuals and businesses alike to purchase your photos for a certain amount of money. You receive a portion of that money while the stock company retains the rest.

Niches

Are you really good at capturing the moment through the eye of a lens? If so, you may find a niche that suits your talents and capabilities, whether it’s photographing weddings, sports events, or family portraits. While you may need special equipment to shoot certain niches, it can often be well worth it, especially if you are pursuing a passion. I lived on the coast for more than a decade, and I can attest that beach portrait and wedding photography is a huge business. If you are very good at photography it might even pay to move to the beach!

Business Photography

A number of businesses need photographers to tell their story. Real estate agents achieve better sales when using pictures to display a home for sale.

Churches want to increase their congregation and may want photographs of their church posted on a community bulletin You might even get the same church to hire you to photograph the members for an album of all of the congregation's families.

Restaurants often need pictures of their menu items or restaurant decor. Make yourself available to these different companies and put your name out there. You may even find inventive ways to get your work recognized, such as permitting a company to advertise on your website if they place some of your photos on the walls of business.

While making money with photography may take time, if you are persistent and passionate enough, it can be a great source of income. Be willing to make sacrifices along the way, especially in the beginning. Practice a little patience as you begin your money making endeavors, and you will find yourself making money doing what you love.
