What Is Squidoo?
Squidoo is the creation of Seth Godin, who popularized the term permission marketing. Permission marketing allows the advertiser to target his ad to a distinct audience who are more likely to be receptive to the message.
Godin is one of the most popular bloggers on the internet. Technorati, which indexes over 100,000,000 blogs, ranks his the number one blog written by a single person. Recently he made his 3,000th post.
Squidoo is a website where anyone can create as many lenses as they like. A lens is basically just one webpage on the site. It is very easy to create a lens. Not only is it free, one can actually make money there. Some make quite a lot. I have read on the forums that a select group of lensmasters make over $1,000 a month. I created my first lens, How to Hunt Arrowheads and Other Artifacts, on January 10 2008. Two months later it made 8 cents. I created a few dozen more lenses in the next year, most of them centered around my hobbies. I don't get rich there, but it does pay for the webhosting for one of my websites ($300 a year). With ten or fifteen minutes of tweaking a month, it is pretty easy to keep that $300 flowing to my PayPal account. Revenue to specific lenses come from modules like eBay, Amazon, Zazzle and CafePress. Adsense, Chitika, and Infolinks income is divided and shared, based on lensrank. Lensmasters can also post affiliate links within their lenses. The greater value of Squidoo for me is the experience that I got with building backlinks and learning how to choose good keywords. Along with good content, backlinks and keywords are the necessary ingredients to drive traffic to a website. If one has never built a successful website, Squidoo can be like going to school for free. I use it today to build backlinks and direct traffic to my websites. I build backlinks by placing links in my lenses. This gives my sites greater authority with the search engines. There are over one million lenses now, created by a few hundred thousand lensmasters. That's a lot of lenses, but only a small minority of lensmasters do anything beyond writing the lenses. It is important to promote each lens that one wants to rise to the first few pages of search results. Just a little effort will usually accomplish that. A few blog (in fact, one could start a free blog for that purpose) and forum posts and some bookmarking will usually get the job done. Lenses of the same niche can be cross-promoted with links and lensrolling. There are even some directories made specifically for lenses. If all this sounds easy, it's probably easier than you think! Open an account and click "Create a Lens." Just follow the instructions from there. If you do have questions, ask in the forums. There are almost always experienced lensmasters hanging out there who will give you a quick answer.
