The Work Layers of Owning Your Own Business

The dream of owning your own business can make you feel glamorous and important. You imagine your name on the business cards, stationery, or website. You look forward to hearing someone call you the president or CEO of the company. And let’s not forget all the money you envision being sent to you in the mail or to your bank account.
Stop! Freeze!
Shake yourself from the dream and start to think of the reality. There is much work to do when running your own business. Most of the operation of the business has to do with planning and execution of those plans.
Let me tell you what happened to me.
First, there was writing the business plan which took a few months. It was good to put together that 20 page document. Having to write the document provoked me to decide what would be the organizational structure of the business. Was I going to run the business as sole-proprietor, LLC or S-corporation? Was I going to have staff and how many hours would the business be open and who was my competition?
Next, there were marketing issues – How would I advertise: through the help of an advertising firm or by word-of-mouth of my clients. Then, there was the making of fliers, business cards, and promotional items that would attract new customers.
All of this doing took weeks, months, and at times felt never-ending. Yet it can be done.
If you’re saying to yourself that if she did I can do it too, then keep dreaming and then start doing! We look forward to seeing your signage, your website, and knowing that you’re probably smiling your way to the bank!
